Owen BOSCAWEN  November 2007 (Principal from 1972 - 1985)

Owen was a pupil, becoming a top scholar, Head Prefect and captain of the 1st XV.  He returned to teach and eventually became Principal of the College from 1972 – 1985.  He is remembered for his innovative approach to many things educational.  After a year in the United States on a Fullbright Scholarship he returned to New Zealand with ideas that he implemented – many of those initiatives still in place today.  His qualification was in Biology and after retirement he turned this knowledge to establishing a successful commercial native tree and shrub nursery.

Owen will be remembered for his sometimes autocratic style, his belief that students needed the opportunity to experience a full range of activities – sport, culture academic achievements – so that they could develop into well rounded citizens of the future.

Sadly, in his latter years, Owen battled Parkinson’s disease.  He is survived by his second wife, Mary and his son John.  His daughter, Leanne, also a former student of the College was killed in a car accident in 1980 when only 20 years old.
